EPA Issues New Residential Guide on Mold

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a guide for homeowners and renters that provides information and guidance on how to identify and clean up residential mold problems and how to prevent mold re-growth. Presently the publication, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home, is only available for viewing on the EPA website.

The guide answers basic mold questions such as why mold grows in homes, can mold cause health problems, how can homeowners and renters get rid of mold, and what to do about mold growing in places not readily visible. It also discusses cleaning up mold, including a recommendation not to use a biocide in most situations; when to call in an expert; testing and sampling; and how to tell when a cleanup is finished. Mold and moisture prevention tips are also included. The EPA guide also has a guide for mold remediation in schools and commercial buildings which is available on the EPA's website at: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/molds/moldguide.html.
